GUNNISON, Colo. – The Cowboys were pinned five times as the Mountaineers showed why they are the seventh ranked team in the country as New Mexico Highlands wrestling (10-7, 2-5 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) fell Thursday night (Feb. 12) at Western State (10-2, 6-1 RMAC) 43-3.
The lone win came at 149 as redshirt freshman
Reis Humphrey scored big to knock off Ian Steen, 13-10.
Senior
Easton Hargrave hung tough with #5 Kyle Piatt at 184 but lost a 9-4 decision. #2 Elliot Copeland beat junior
JB Bechtloff at 174 with a first period pin while #6 Sam Magnum pinned redshirt sophomore
Jermey Misailegalu in the second period.
Freshman
Victor Munoz was pinned in the second period by Trenton Piatt at 125, Zachary Shank pinned redshirt junior
Tre Humphrey at 133 and redshirt sophomore
Cody Marquez was pinned by Peter Anguiano in the second period.
In other matches, Corbin Bennetts allowed only an escape in a 6-1 win against redshirt junior
Dan Gaylor at 141. Freshman
Kellen Pelzel lost a 12-4 major decision at 157 and redshirt junior
Juan Alvarado lost 12-5 to Travis Bradford at 165.
New Mexico Highlands returns to action tomorrow against sixth ranked Colorado Mesa in Grand Junction, Colorado. The dual is set for 7 p.m.
