Wrestling Hangs with #6 Colorado Mesa Early

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.
– The match stood tied at nine through four matches, but the Mavericks won five of six to end the match as New Mexico Highlands (10-8, 2-6 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) fell to Colorado Mesa (13-1, 7-0 RMAC) 36-12 Friday night (Feb. 13) in Grand Junction, Colorado.
 
Trailing 5-0 after redshirt freshman Trevor Perez lost by tech fall to Colby Christian 17-1 at 125, redshirt junior Tre Humphrey put the Cowboys up 6-5 with a pin of Jonathon Stelling at 133. Humphrey got the takedown but was reversed by Stelling. Humphrey escaped, but Stelling got a takedown. It was Humphrey's turn for a reversal, but this time he stuck Stelling on his back in 2:04. Redshirt junior Dan Gaylor lost an 8-0 major decision at 141 as the Mavericks took a 9-6 lead.
 
It was another Humphrey who tied it up at 149. Redshirt freshman Reis Humphrey pulled away late for the 5-2 win. After a scoreless opening period, Humphrey  chose down in the second and got the escape. After Nick Swanson got the escape to tie it in the third, Humphrey recorded a pair of takedowns for the 5-2 win and a tied dual at nine.
 
At 157, #3 James Martinez took down freshman Kellen Pelzel and recorded the fall in less than a minute as the home team took the lead for good. Jessie Hoffschneider won by forfeit at 165 before junior JB Bechtloff lost 7-2 to Bruno  Nicoletti at 174.
 
The lone win at the upper weights came by senior Easton Hargrave at 184. Hargrave got the first period takedown and got an escape and takedown in the second. In the third, Hargrave got a takedown around a pair of escapes by Willy Holdren put Hargrave up 7-2. Hargrave claimed the riding point to win 8-2.
 
Colorado Mesa finished the night with a fall at 197 and won by forfeit at 285 as the Mavericks won 36-12.
 
The Cowboys will take two weeks off before returning to action Feb. 27-28 at the NCAA Western Regional in Pueblo, Colorado.
