LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The Cowgirls kept pace with the Clan for the first three innings, but Simon Fraser (6-4) tallied four in the fourth en route to a 7-3 win against New Mexico Highlands (1-4) on the final day of the Montana State Billings Desert Stinger.
Down 1-0 in the second, sophomore
Alysia Cavone singled to leadoff the inning and scored on a two-out double by junior
Nalani Hernandez. The Cowgirls climbed within 3-2 in the third when junior
Ka'uilani Kamai led off the inning with a single, advanced to second on a fly ball and scored on senior
Jessica Brink's single.
Freshman
Megan Thursby walked, was sacrificed to second and scored after a pair of Simon Fraser miscues to close out the scoring in the game.
Kamai led the Cowgirls with two hits in four at-bats with a run scored. Brink took the loss in the circle and falls to 0-3 on the year. She gave up nine hits and seven runs (five earned) with seven strikeouts in seven innings of work.
Simon Fraser took a 3-2 lead after three and expanded it to five in the top of the fourth. Loading the bases with no outs, Katherine Murnaghan singled in a pair of runs. Robyn Mogavero added a fielder's choice RBI and Taylor Gillis scored on an error as the Cowgirls committed two in the inning.
Stefanie Sheard went 2-for-4 with a run scored while Murnafhan had two hits in three at-bats with two RBIs and a run scored. Alia Stachoski improved to 2-1 on the season, allowing seven hits and three runs (two earned) for the complete game win.
The Cowgirls return to action Wednesday (Feb. 18) when they travel to Portales, New Mexico, for a double header against Eastern New Mexico beginning at noon.
