LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The Cowgirls never trailed and were only tied once early on the day as New Mexico Highlands (5-15, 4-12 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) beat Adams State 67-60 Saturday night in Las Vegas, New Mexico.
Up 8-6, junior
Brittany Brown hit the triple to put the Cowgirls up five. Senior
Kristy Marquez then hit four in a row as Highlands all of a sudden led by nine with 12:34 left in the game. Adams State cut the deficit to four right before half, but Marquez hit another pair from the charity stripe and senior
Jenny Johnson hit a triple to give Highlands a 33-24 lead into intermission.
Marquez came off the bench for 14, including hitting every eight shots from the charity stipe. Johnson led the team with 17 points while classmate
Angellina Sanchez chipped in 13.
The margin was double-digits for most of the second half for the Cowgirls until a late Grizzlies run was a little too little too late. Emilie Klint and J'nae Spuires-Horton scored 13 points while Desiree Aderson scored 10.
The Cowgirls outrebounded the Grizzlies by 10, 39-29, in the game.
The Cowgirls return to action Saturday (Feb. 7) against Fort Lewis at 5 p.m.
