Wild Comeback Falls Short for Wrestling on Senior Day against Colorado Mines

LAS VEGAS, N.M. - The Cowboys tried to put together a great comeback after falling behind 15-0, but the New Mexico Highlands wrestling team (9-6, 2-4 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) fell to Colorado Mines (5-3, 1-3 RMAC) 24-18 Friday afternoon (Feb. 6) in Las Vegas, New Mexico.

Senior Easton Hargrave ended his career in style. After both he and Ian Cheatum went back and forth in the first period, Hargrave put Cheatum on his back and recorded his second pin in three matches this week to cut an 18-3 deficit to 18-14. 

Redshirt sophomore Cody Marquez at 285 was taken down early by Nick DeBruyn, but he wasted no tme in taking a 7-2 lead with a reversal, three back points than two more in the scamble. With the riding point, Marquez claimed a 15-3 major decision.

After three weight classes and Highlands trailed 15-0, redshirt fresham Reis Humphrey tallied a high-scoring shootout, 15-8 at 149.  After the Cowboys fell at 157, redshirt junior Juan Alvarado went to work and claimed a 3-2 win at 165. Junior JB Bechtloff got a huge, methodical win at 174 against Ben Krantz. After Bedhtloff started on top of the second, he rode Krantz the whole time. In the third, Bechtloff recorded the escape and clinched the match with a late takedown. With the riding point, Bechtloff won 4-0 to cut the deficit to 18-9 before Hargrave's pin made it 18-15.

In other action, redshirt freshman Trevor Perez and redshirt junior Tre Humphrey were pinned at 125 and 133, respectively. Jacob Gerken claimed a 6-4 win at 141 against redshirt junior Dan Gaylor. After the Reid Humphrey win, John Crowley knocked off redshirt sophomore Jesse Martinez 3-1 at 157. After the Cowboys picked up three wins in a row, Colorado School of Mines clinched the match when Paul Willson pinned redshirt sophomore Jermey Misailegalu at 197 in 2:35 at 197.

The Cowboys step out of conference for their final non-conference dual of the season Monday (Feb. 9) at Wayland Baptist. The first match is set for 6 p.m.
