Cowboys Cannot Hold Early Leads in Doubleheader loss to Adams State

ALAMOSA, Colo. - The Cowboys took early leads in both games, but big innings by the Grizzlies gave them a pair of wins as New Mexio Highlands (17-20, 11-16 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) lost the first game 6-2 to Adams State (15-24, 12-15) before falling 6-5 in game two in Alamosa, Colorado, Saturday afternoon (April 18).

In game two, the Cowboys scored five runs in the first. The Cowboys loaded the bases before senior Joe Cervantes picked up an RBI when he was hit by pitch. With two outs, junior Kenneth Fudge singled to drive in a few runs. Fudge used head's up baserunning and advanced to second on the throw before classmate Jesus Caporal singled in another pair of runs.

However, Highlands scored no more in the game as Adams State scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth for the win. Jaron Dorchinez doubled and scored on Jerid Huggins single off of senior starter Anthony Badalucco to draw witin 5-2. After loading the bases, Chris Morley singled in a pair of runs. Three-straight walks off senior Morgan McCasland, gave Adams State the 6-5 lead, an advantage they would not relinquish.

McCasland took the loss and falls to 1-1 on the season. J.D. Heredia improves to 4-4 on the season, picking up the complete-game win by allowing five runs and seven hits in seven innings.

Game one saw the Cowboys take a 2-0 lead in the third on a two out, two RBI single by fifth-year senior Matthew Chavez. However, it would be all Highlands would score in the game as Drew Bollig hit a grand slam in the bottom of the inning off of junior Avery Brandon. Dorchinez added a solo shot and the Grizzlies added a final tally in the sixth for the 6-2 win.

Andrew MacMahon picked up the complete-game win, improving to 3-4 by allowing four hits and two runs. Brandon fell to 1-6.

The Cowboys finish the series Sunday (April 19) against Adams State with a single, nine-inning game at noon.
