Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Cowgirls Shut Down Cougars

Las Vegas, NM- The New Mexico Highlands Women's Soccer team picked up their second win in three games as they beat the Colorado Christian University Cougars 1-0. This brings the Cowgirls overall record to 2-6-1, and 2-3 in RMAC.

First Half:

Senior Anyssa Dagnino had a look at the goal, but she was blocked by a Cougar defender. It took just over 36 minutes to get a point on the board, but it was the Cowgirls who struck first as Dagnino assisted fellow Senior Salina Lucero on the first goal of the game. This was huge as it sent the Cowgirls into the half up one.  The Cougars took 6 shots in the 1st half opposed to the Cowgirls 5 shots. However, Freshmen goalie Makenna Luster played solid and kept the Cougars scoreless through the first half. The score after the 1st half was 1-0 with the Cowgirls on top.

Second Half:

Neither team was willing to give an inch in the 2nd half. The Cowgirls continued to play smothering defense as the Cougars were not allowed any clean shots.  Each team took fewer shots in the 2nd as the Cowgirls took 3 and the Cougars took 5 shots. Lucero attempted to extend the lead as the game wore on, but the Colorado Christian defense took that opportunity away. With only ten minutes left in the game, Cougars Lauren Cardoza had a free kick but Senior Ashley Simons jumpep up and headed the ball away from the goal. The Cowgirls closed the game out by not giving the Cougars much of a chance to send the game into overtime. The only goal of the game came off the foot of Lucero as the game came to an end with your Cowgirls on top 1-0.

The Cowgirls will welcome Metropolitan State University of Denver to Perkins Stadium on October 7th at 7:00p.m.
