Las Vegas, NM- The New Mexico Highlands University Women's Basketball team stumbled against Western State Colorado Mountaineers by a score of 67-54. This drops your Cowgirls to 2-6 overall and 1-4 RMAC.
First Quarter: Both teams came out firing as Sophomore
Ida Valencia hit a 3 point bucket to start the game, but the Mountaineers answered back quickly with a 3 of their own. Western State sprung out to a 12-3 lead before Valencia could sink another triple. A layup by Sophomore
Kaylani Maiava closed the gap for the Cowgirls as they trailed 12-14.
Second Quarter: The Mountaineers scored the first 4 points of the quarter en route to a 6-1 run. The Cowgirls kept nipping away at the lead, but Western State would not give it up. They led by as much as 8 points before the Cowgirls cut the lead to 4 off of a jumper by Junior
Kaelin Shaffer.
Third Quarter: Sophomore
Brianna Pribble sank a 3 to open up the second half for the Cowgirls, bringing the score to 35-30, in favor of Western State. Then, Freshmen
Juliana Gurule hit a 3 of her own to cut the deficit to 2 points. With about 2 minutes gone in the quarter, Valencia hit another 3, this time to give the Cowgirls the 38-37 lead.
Fourth Quarter: The teams traded free throws at the beginning of the quarter, but then the Mountaineers took off on an 11-0 run. Valencia hit yet another 3 to trim their deficit to 10 points, but they could not come back from the hole they were in. The Mountaineers hit another 3 to seal the game.
Final Score: Cowgirls-54 Mountaineers-67
