Cowgirls Fall to the Griffins

Las Vegas, NM- The New Mexico Highlands Women's Basketball team narrowly dropped the contest to Westminster College-Utah Griffins, 52-60. The Cowgirls drop to 2-5 overall and 1-3 in RMAC
 
First Quarter: The Cowgirls came out of the gates firing on all cylinders as they opened on a 8-0 lead. Freshmen Juliana Gurule pitched in 4 of those 8 points. Freshmen Ari Baca also had 4 early points as they extended their lead to 10-3. The Griffins used the 3 point shot to get them back in the game.
 
Second Quarter: Junior Shania Ratliff came out of the break firing, and she connected on her first 3 point shot of the game. Sophomore Kaylana Maiava converted on a and one to extend the Cowgirls lead to 23-14. The Griffins utilized the 3 pointer once again to get back in the game, and they came back to take the lead, 26-25. Then, Maiava hit a jumper to give the Cowgirls back the lead heading into the half.
 
Third Quarter: The 3rd quarter opened up with both teams battling. The Griffins took the lead shortly, but Sophomore Brianna Pribble started to heat up as she sunk two 3's in a short amount of time. However, Westminster answered back with two 3's of their own to tighten up the score once more. The teams continued to trade 3 point shots as Ratliff hit her second of the night to give the Cowgirls a narrow 2 point lead, but the Griffins closed on a 5-0 run to take the lead into the fourth.
 
Fourth Quarter: The Griffins scored the first 6 points of the quarter before Ratliff could nail two free throws to slow their pace. The Cowgirls had a hard time finding the basket until Ratliff hit her third 3 of the game. They would struggle to score again and the Griffins were able to secure the victory.
 
Final Score: Cowgirls- 52 Griffins- 60
 
The Cowgirls will head to Colorado to play the Colorado State University Rams on December 11th at 2:00 p.m.
