Tough Overtime Loss Ends Cowboys' Season At Colorado Mesa

Box Score GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- From the tip of the first round RMAC Shootout game between the Cowboys and the Mavericks of Colorado Mesa everyone knew it was going to be a physical and emotional game. The Cowboys' season comes to an end after a 95-77 overtime loss to Colorado Mesa.
 
The Cowboys were on the board first with a lay-up from Marlon Johnson. On the next Cowboy possession Johnson threw the ball inside to Shane where he was tripled teamed but came out with a thunderous dunk and give the Cowboys the 4-0 lead just over a minutes in the game.
 
At the first media timeout the Cowboys led 8-6. Right after the timeout Stephan of Mesa made his first basket of the game. The Cowboys would score the next four points on free throws from Ron Lawton and James Healy. The Mavericks went on a 10-0 run to give them their first lead of the game with a score of 16-11 with 13:18 left in the first half. Jonathon Mines knocked down a three from the right wing to stop the Maverick's run with 12:24 on the clock.
 
With 7:51 on the clock and coming out the media down 22-20, Johnson knocked down two from the line to make it a tie game. The Mavericks' Riley came down the court and knocked down a three. Van Tassel knocked down two from the charity stripe, then a Davis runner gave the Mavericks the 29-22 lead with just over five and half minutes left in the first. The great Maverick defense would hold the Cowboys without a field goal for over eight and a half minutes as they went on a 19-10 run to end the first half. At the half the Mavericks lead by a score of 35-30.
 
The Cowboys came out in the of the locker fired up. Mines was fouled behind the arc on the first Cowboy possession. He knocked down two of the three. Kaylen Shane rocked the basket with thunderous dunk. Kendrick Nichols saw the bottom of the net from three to give the Cowboys the 37-35 lead at the 17:55 mark.
 
After two Maverick free throws Ron Lawton showed some range of his own knocking down back to back threes to make it a 43-41 Cowboy lead. Mines joined into the party with a fast break lay-up to make it a 45-43 game going into the under 16 time out!
 
The Mavericks made a run a 9-2 run over 2:16 to take the 55-51 lead and force a Highlands timeout. The Cowboys would answer to what coach Snow said as they went on a 9-0 run to make it a 60-55 Cowboy lead with 8:27 left in the game.
 
It was with 6:10 that the Cowboys would have a one-point lead, and that would be the biggest lead that either team would see. In the last five minutes the game would see four lead changes and four ties. The biggest lead change of the night was by Mesa with six seconds left and the Cowboys up two. Lopez drove past the Cowboy defense for a lay-up to tie that game that sent it into overtime.
 
Unfortunately, the Mavericks came out hot in overtime. They Mavericks would outscore the Cowboys in overtime by a score of 22-4. The Cowboy's season comes to an end at 15-14. The Cowboys made a big improvement from last season when they only won five games. It is the first Cowboy's winning season since the 2010-2011 season. The Cowboys would like to thank all of the fans for supporting them throughout the season and hope to see you all at the games next season.
