Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Cowgirls Bring Home the Win

Spearfish, SD-New Mexico Highlands University Women's Soccer Team faced off against Black Hills State University.  Your Cowgirls got their first win of the season (7-2). The Cowgirls advance to an overall record  1-5-1 and the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference record 1-2.

1st half:

The Cowgirls came out ready to play as they started off with a shot at the Yellow Jackets goal, but it was too high. Then within five minutes, Senior Salina Lucero got the Cowgirls their first goal of the game.  The Yellow Jackets fired back and tied the score with a goal by Katie Nielson . After that Junior Haley Velez made the second goal for your cowgirls.  Then Junior  Daniela Fonseca scored the third goal of the game . The Yellow Jackets tried to make another goal, but it was saved by freshmen goalie Katherine Scott.

2nd Half:

Into the second half, Cowgirls came out hot with a shot by freshmen Hannah Shearin, but was blocked by Yellow Jacket's goalie Raven Johnson.  Junior Emily Ortiz kicked a corner kick, and found freshman Savannah Montoya to give them their fourth goal.  The Cowgirls kept attacking the Yellow Jackets goal, but could not get it passed their goalie until Senior  Anyssa Dagino scored bringing the Cowgirls ahead by five. Then Daniela Fonseca made a her second goal of the game but the Yellow Jackets made a comeback effort with a goal by Molly Lauseng off of a penalty kick. For the remainder of the game, the Cowgirls kept the play on Black Hills side of the field.

NMHU took the win with the final score 7-2.

Head Coach Oscar Mendoza had a positive responds by saying, "I am pleased with our performance. Our team did well tactically as a group. We stuck with our game plan and got the results we wanted.

 Junior Forward Haley Velez with 2 goals on 5 shots
Freshmen Forward Daniela Fonseca with 2 goals on 10 shots

The Cowgirls will return home on Friday Sept. 30, 2016 at 7pm to play against Colorado School of Mines and on Sunday Oct. 2, 2016 at 1pm to play against Colorado Christian University.
