Cowgirls Fall to Mountain Lions

Las Vegas, NM- The New Mexico Highlands University Women's Basketball team fell to the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs Mountain Lions, 70-80. This drops your Cowgirls to 2-11 overall and 1-9 RMAC.

First Quarter: The Cowgirls came out of the gates looking to shoot the 3 ball, and they succeeded in doing so. Freshmen Juliana Gurule nailed two, then Sophomore Kaylani Maiava hit one of her own to give them the 11-9 lead. Sophomore Ida Valencia ripped off 5 straight points to extend their lead to 16-13. The Cowgirls had their offense rolling as they went into the 2nd quarter leading, 22-19.

Second Quarter: Gurule opened up the 2nd on fire as she scored the first 8 points for the Cowgirls, giving her team the 30-26 lead. The Mountain Lions went on a quick 5-0 run before Junior Kaelin Shaffer would halt the run with a free throw. The Cowgirls would surrender the lead and head into the half down by 3.

Third Quarter: The Mountain Lions would come out of the break and nail a 3 to extend their lead. The Cowgirls were starting to slip behind a bit, but Shaffer would hit a key 3 point shot to cut the deficit to 43-49. They could not get much going for them after this however as they would fall behind, 47-66 to end the third quarter.

Fourth Quarter: Maiava got the quarter started the right way for the Cowgirls as she came out and hit a quick jumper. Maiava started to take things into her own hands as she nailed a 3 right after  to cut into the lead. Then, Sophomore Brianna Pribble wanted in on the action as she hit a 3 to bring the score to 55-68. A little more than a minute passed and Pribble was able to get off another 3.
