Cowgirls Fall to Roadrunners

Las Vegas, NM- The New Mexico Highlands University Women's Basketball team lost to the Metropolitan State University of Denver Road Runners, 58-72. This will drop your Cowgirls to 2-12 overall and 1-10 RMAC.
 
First Quarter: Sophomore Kaylani Maiava got the Cowboys going with 4 points early in the first. The Road Runners hit a 3 to take the lead, but Freshmen Juliana Gurule fired back with a 3 of her own to knot up the game at 9-9. The Road Runners would go on to score 7 unanswered points, until Gurule could hit another triple to halt the run. The Cowgirls ended the first quarter trailing, 13-16.
 
Second Quarter: The Road Runners started the second quarter hot as the extended their lead. Then, Junior Mele Tupouata and Maiava each hit a bucket to trim the deficit to 4 points. The Road Runners would keep the Cowgirls off of the scoreboard for nearly four minutes before Junior Kaelin Shaffer could hit a layup and a free throw to bring the score to 21-29 entering the break.
 
Third Quarter: The Cowgirls scored the first 5 points of the half, but the Road Runners hit a 3 to counter. They were able to get their lead up to 13 off of another 3 with just over 3 minutes remaining in the quarter. The Cowgirls battled but could not make up many points as they went in the fourth quarter trailing, 49-38.
 
Fourth Quarter: The Cowgirls opened up the fourth scoring, but they could not seem to get a stop on defense as Metropolitan had an answer for everything that was thrown at them. Senior Jacinda Woodruff, Maiava and Shaffer scored well in the rest of the fourth but the Cowgirls were not able to get a stop to mount a comeback.
 
Final Score: Cowgirls-58 Road Runners- 72
 
The Cowgirls will take on Colorado School of Mines on January 17th at 6:00 p.m.
