Golden, CO- The New Mexico Highlands University Women's Basketball team fall to Colorado School of Mines Ore Diggers as they fell, 44-63. This puts your Cowgirls to 2-13 overall and 1-11 RMAC.
First Quarter: It took nearly two minutes into the first before either team could put points on the board, but it would be the Cowgirls who would strike first. Then, the Ore Diggers would score 7 unanswered before Freshmen
Ashlynn Trujillo could hit a free throw. The Cowgirls struggled to get the points flowing in the 1
st as they went into the 2
nd quarter trailing, 7-20.
Second Quarter: Sophomore
Ida Valencia took it upon herself to get the Cowgirls going as she started the 2
nd quarter with 5 straight points, bringing the score to 23-12, Mines. Juniors
Mele Tupouata and
Kaelin Shaffer pitched in a basket each to close the gap a bit. Then, Sophomore
Kaylani Maiava scored a bucket of her own to cut the deficit to 18-29, going into the half.
Third Quarter: The Cowgirls had a tough time out of the gates, then midway through the quarter, Maiava and Valencia hit two quick buckets to help the team regain composure. Shaffer also contributed with a couple of free throws. Maiava scored the last 5 points of the quarter for her team, notching 13 total through three quarters
Fourth Quarter: Maiava continued her hot streak as she scored the first two buckets in the 4
th quarter for the Cowgirls. Then, it was Shaffer's turn to have the hot hand as she scored 6 straight points for her team, bringing the score to 42-60. The Cowgirls would only score two more points as they fell to the Ore Diggers.
Final Score: Cowgirls-44 Ore Diggers-63
