Cowgirls Fall to #18 Rangers

Denver, CO- The New Mexico Highlands University Women's Basketball team dropped the contest to  #18 Regis University Rangers by a score of 46-77. This drops your Cowgirls to 2-15 overall and 1-13 RMAC.

First Quarter: The Cowgirls opened up the game with a balanced attack as Freshmen Juliana Gurule hit a quick jumper, then Freshmen Ari Baca came back down and nailed a layup. It would be Sophomore Ida Valencia's turn to score the ball as she hit a jumper for her team. Gurule would come down the court and sink a 3 to pull the Cowgirls within four points as they trailed, 12-16. The Rangers started to pull away as they led 28-15 right before the end of the quarter, then Junior Kaelin Shaffer hit a much needed 3.

Second Quarter: Junior Jacinda Woodruff came out of the gates to hit a layup at the start of the second, then Gurule laid in another triple to cut their deficit to seven points. The Cowgirls had a tough time finding the basket until Valencia could hit a 3 to break the silence and bring the score to 28-37. They went on another scoring drought until Junior Mele Tupouata could hit a shot to end the half.

Third Quarter: Gurule got the Cowgirls started in the second half as she hit a layup to give her 10 points at that point. The Rangers played tough defense and kept the Cowgirls off of the scoreboard until Tupouata could hit another shot, bringing the score to 35-63. Freshmen Lexi Collins took a steal coast to coast as she hit a layup to end the scoring in the third for the Cowgirls.

Fourth Quarter: The Cowgirls couldn't get much going until Valencia nailed a 3 to bring the score to 40-67. Woodruff would score the last four points of the game for her team, to finish with 8 total. Regis would finish strong and extend their lead.

Final Score: Cowgirls-46 Rangers-77

The Cowgirls travel to Nebraska to take on the Chadron State College Eagles on January 28th at 5:30 p.m.
