Hays, KS- The New Mexico Highlands University Baseball team dropped today's contest to the Fort Hays State University Tigers by a score of, 8-18. The Cowboys drop to 0-6 overall on the season.

The Cowboys couldn't get much going in the top of the first as their only base runner was Junior
Luis Ornelas, who reached by way of a walk. Senior
Phil Trujillo started the day at pitcher for his team. He hit his first batter with a pitch, then the next batter hit a two run home run. The Tigers would score twice more before the end of the inning.

Junior
Frankie Silva got the bats going for the Cowboys as he blasted a solo home run in the top of the second. Seniors
Emilio Medina and
Brian Chaparro found themselves on base, but they could not get across home plate. The Tigers pushed two more runs across in the bottom of the inning, but things could have been worse as they left two on base.

Junior
Codie Simmons got hit with a pitch, to get on base. Then, Ornelas found himself on base with another walk. Junior
Eduardo Perez continued his solid weekend as he came up to the plate and smashed a three run homer to pull the Cowboys closer at 4-6. Trujillo responded well after a rough start as he sat down the next three Tigers batters that he faced.

The Cowboys pushed another runner across in the top of the fourth as Ornelas hit a single, opening the way for Senior
Brad Blackwell to score. Trujillo gave up a solo run home run in the bottom of the inning and allowed two more on base before he was pulled for Senior
Max Siedlecki. Siedlecki got the Cowboys out of the inning with no more damage done.

Medina cracked a home run ball in the top of the fifth, also bringing Chaparro home with him. This knotted the game up at 7-7, but the bottom of the inning was rough for the Cowboys. Siedlecki gave up five runs before he was relieved by Senior Cory Nelson. He would give up two more runs to the Tigers before he could get out of the innings.

Perez scored in the top of the seventh off of a throwing error by the Tigers, but they would get that run right back as Junior
Joe Brennan gave up a solo run homer on his first batter.

The Cowboys are off until February 22
nd when they travel to take on the University of the Southwest Mustangs in Hobbs, New Mexico.
