Las Vegas, NM- The New Mexico Highlands University Women's Basketball team dropped tonight's contest against the Colorado School of Mines Ore Diggers, 48-61. The Cowgirls fall to 2-21 overall and 1-19 RMAC.

First Quarter: Sophomore
Ida Valencia got the game started with a splash as she knocked down a 3 in the opening seconds. The Ore Diggers took a 4-3 lead, but then Freshmen
Ari Baca nailed a triple to give the Cowgirls the lead once more. They couldn't find the basket for awhile until Junior
Mele Tupouata hit a layup, at this point the Cowgirls were down 8-12. Junior
Kaelin Shaffer would knock down a jumper before the end of the quarter to cut into the deficit even more.

Second Quarter: Sophomore Kaylnai Maiava came out of the break firing as she hit a triple to start the second quarter. The Cowgirls regained the lead at 20-17 behind Valencia and Maiava. The Ore Diggers fought back to retake the lead for themselves, but Tupouata hit a jumper giving it back to her team momentarily. The Cowgirls would hit a dry spell to end the half and Mines would go on to claim a 28-22 lead.

Third Quarter: The Ore Diggers continued their run into the third, but Baca would nail 4 free throws in a span on thirty seconds to cut into the deficit. Valencia nailed a much needed 3 for the Cowgirls to get them back within single digits at 29-38. Maiava was able to get the Ore Digger lead down to 7 points, but they went cold after this. Mines would go into the final quarter of play leading, 51-33.

Fourth Quarter: The Ore Diggers scored the first 4 points of the fourth quarter, then Maiava halted the run with a free throw. On the ensuing possession Valencia hit another shot from downtown to bring the score to 37-55. Maiava started to heat up and scored 5 straight points, but it was too late for the Cowgirls to mount a comeback as they fell to the Ore Diggers, 48-61.

The Cowgirls will travel to the Colorado to take on the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks on February 24
th at 5:30 p.m.
