Cowgirls Struggle Against Maverick

Grand Junction, CO- The  New Mexico Highlands University Women's Basketball team dropped tonight's contest against the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks, 39-87. Your Cowgirls now drop to 2-22 overall and 1-20 RMAC.
 
First Quarter: The Cowgirls had multiple scorers to start the game. Freshmen Ari Baca scored 5 of their first 12 points, Junior Kaelin Shaffer scored 4, and Sophomore Ida Valencia knocked down a 3. They were down 12-14 at this point, but then they went cold as the Mavericks closed out the quarter leading 23-14.
 
Second Quarter: The Mavericks scored the first 9 points of the second quarter, then Sophomore Kaylani Maiava hit a 3 to halt the run momentarily. The only other field goal for the Cowgirls was a jumper by Maiava. The Mavericks took a 21-51 lead into the half.
 
Third Quarter:  Valencia hit two early free throws to end the Mavericks 5-0 run to start the half. Baca hit a jumper and Junior Mele Tupouata hit a free throw to round out the scoring in the third for the Cowgirls.
 
Fourth Quarter: Baca scored the first 5 points for the Cowgirls in the fourth. She hit a jumper at the start, then she came back down and nailed a 3 to bring the score to 31-78. Maiava hit two free throws and knocked down a triple with about five minutes left in the game. Freshmen Ashlynn Trujillo would pitch in two points, and Senior Morgan Godinett would knock down a free throw at the conclusion of the game.
 
Final Score: Cowgirls-39 Mavericks-87
 
Your Cowgirls will wrap up their season tomorrow, February 25th, at 5:00 p.m. against the Western State Colorado University Mountaineers.
