Cowboys Out Hit Mustangs for the Series

Las Vegas, NM- The New Mexico Highlands University Baseball team took on the University of the Southwest Mustangs today in a doubleheader.
 
University of the Southwest Mustangs Game 1
Senior pitcher Cody Lawson started the first game of the day for his team. He gave up one run in the top of the first, but the Cowboys' bats had his back as Junior James Cordova smacked a 3 run homer scoring Senior Jeremy McCarthy and Senior Easton Garcia.
 
Senior pitcher Phil Trujillo was brought on in relief for Lawson in the top of the third. The Mustangs would push one run across in the inning. Senior Brad Blackwell led off the bottom of the inning with a walk. McCarty would slap a double that scored Blackwell soon after. Junior Eduardo Perez grounded out in his at bat, but he picked up the RBI as McCarty ran home to make the score 5-2.
 
Senior pitcher Max Siedlecki entered the game for Trujillo in the top of the fifth. The Mustangs scored 2 runs off of 2 hits in of the inning. Garcia singled to lead off the bottom of the inning. He would be brought home by McCarty shortly after.
 
Junior Luis Ornelas got on base in the top of the sixth with a walk. Senior Brian Chaparro also earned a base as he walked. Sophomore Joseph Cilladi brought Ornelas home as he grounded out. Garcia would come to the plate next and nail a double, good enough to score Chaparro.
 
Graduate pitcher Avery Brandon would come on in the top of the seventh for the save. He would secure the Cowboys first victory of the day as he didn't allow a hit. The Cowboys would win, 8-4.
 
University of the Southwest Mustangs Game 2
Senior pitcher Dylan Norris started the second game of the day on the mound for his team. He would fare well in the top of the first as he only allowed one hit. Garcia led off the bottom of the inning with a nice double down the left field line. McCarty would ground out in his at bat, but it would pave the way for Garcia to come home.
 
Norris had a strong second inning as he limited the Mustangs to only one hit once again. Junior Codie Simmons doubled down the left field line to lead off the bottom of the inning. Senior Ben Smithson reached on a fielding error and picked up the RBI as Simmons found his way home.
 
Senior pitcher Corey Nelson came on to pitch in the top of the third. He did well as he didn't allow a hit in the top of the inning. Blackwell led off the bottom of the inning with a single, then McCarty would get on with a walk. Sophomore Travis Spruiell would pick up the RBI with a single, scoring McCarty to make the score 3-0.
 
The Mustangs would pick up their first run of the game in the top of the fifth. The Cowboys would counter with a solid 5 run inning as McCarty scored first off of a fielder's choice. Simmons would bring Perez home as he flew out. Senior Emilio Medina would hit a single to left field, scoring Spruiell. Smithson would cap off the scoring with a 2 run homer as he and Medina would score.
 
The Cowboys would score twice more in the top of the sixth as Blackwell smashed a triple that scored Garcia. Blackwell would score later on as Perez grounded out.
 
Junior pitcher Dakota Pacheco would come on in the top of the seventh. He would sit the Mustangs down in order, preserving the 10-1 victory for the Cowboys.
 
The Cowboys will travel to Colorado next as they take on the Colorado Christian University Cougars on May 5th.
