Box Score 4 Las Vegas, NM - The New Mexico Highlands University Volleyball team returned home from the Kathleen Brasfield Tournament hosted by Angelo State University with a 2-2 record to open the 2017 season.

Brianna Montano was named to the All-Tournament Team for her outstanding play over the four game series in San Angelo, Texas.
The Cowgirls opened the weekend with a tough five set loss to the Javelinas of Texas A&M-Kingsville. Hitters Montano and
Cynthia Norris combined for over 20 kills in the hard-fought match but TAMKU prevailed 3-2.
The second game of the tournament saw the HU women take down Limestone College of South Carolina in a 3-0 sweep. That match-up saw Montano (12) and
Tiffany Matchet (14) combine for another 25 plus kills for the HU attack. Shining on the defensive side, Montano tallied 17 digs while setter
Shayli Schulz dished out 25 scoring assists for the Cowgirls.
Day two of the tournament saw the Cowgirls opening up with a rematch against TAMKU. This time the Cowgirls reversed the outcome in a thrilling five set match. Cowgirls, Norris and Machet tallied double-digit kills and combined for three aces and three blocks to help avenge the opening round loss to the Javelinas.
The HU squad closed out the tournament against the host school. The Belles of Angelo State came into the season ranked number eight in the nation and, while the Cowgirls came close to the upset in the third set 25-23, in the end it was a three set sweep for Angelo State.
The volleyball team returns to action with the home opener Friday night September 15th during Homecoming Week. The Cowgirls take on Colorado School of Mines at 7pm in Wilson Gym.
