LAS VEGAS, N.M. --- The New Mexico Highlands women's soccer team played Westminster tough, but couldn't break through the Griffin defense as the Cowgirls lost 2-0 Sunday afternoon at Sanchez Family Stadium.
NMHU (1-12-1 overall, 1-9-1 RMAC) fell behind 1-0 in the 29
th minute when Westminster's Alexa Maple took a pass from Libby Dearden and scored from 30 yards out into the top-left corner.
The score remained the same until the 74
th minute when a scrum in front of the goal led to Sara Weixler punching a ball into the bottom-right corner to make it 2-0 Griffins (11-3-1, 8-2-1).
The Cowgirls didn't have many chances as they were outshot 17-3, including 9-2 on shots on goal.
Autumn Stewart,
Alyssa Palmer and
Breanna Fatten each took a shot for the Cowgirls.
NMHU honored its seniors in their final home game of their career in
Alondra Gildo-Ceballos,
Anna Medina,
Brooke Niimi (a junior athletically, but finishing her degree in the spring), Palmer,
Larissa Romero and
Tania Salcedo.
The Cowgirls close out the season next week as they travel to take on Adams State 3 p.m. Thursday and Fort Lewis 1 p.m. Saturday.
