ALAMOSA, Colo. --- The New Mexico Highlands women's soccer team seemed destined for a tie with Adams State as the Cowgirls and Grizzlies combined for 45 shots and 18 on goal with nobody finding the back of the net.
But NMHU's
Alondra Gildo-Ceballos ensured that didn't happen as the senior ripped a goal two minutes into the second overtime to beat Adams State 1-0 Thursday afternoon on the road.
The goal is Gildo-Ceballos' team-leading fourth and came on a free kick in the 102nd minute that she deposited into the top-left corner. The score came in a game where both teams had their opportunities during regulation.
The Grizzlies took 21 shots in regulation (nine on goal) while the Cowgirls took 17 (seven on goal), but neither team could crack through. In the first overtime, NMHU took three shots (one on goal) while Adams State took four (one on goal) – but again, nobody found the back of the net. Overall, the Grizzlies outshot the Cowgirls 25-21.
Cowgirl keeper
Karina Vega was key in the win, picking up 10 saves while not allowing a goal.
Breanna Fatten led the team with seven shots while Gildo-Ceballos took four shots.
The Cowgirls return to action 1:30 p.m. Saturday as they travel to take on Fort Lewis in Durango, Colorado.
