LAS VEGAS, N.M. --- The New Mexico Highlands volleyball team dropped a tough one Friday night as they fell to Adams State 3-2 (22-25, 22-25, 25-13, 25-21, 15-13) at Wilson Complex.
It started out well for the Cowgirls (7-17, 5-11) as they took the first two sets from the Grizzlies (10-14, 7-9) – both 25-22. Adams State rallied and took the third set 25-13 and the fourth 25-21 to set up the fifth-and-deciding set.
Neither team had more than a point lead as the fifth was tied 9-9. The Cowgirls then got a kill from
Julie Staffler, and along with a Grizzly attack error, took an 11-9 advantage. NMHU led 12-10 after a
Cynthia Norris kill and held a 13-12 advantage after a Staffler kill.
But the Grizzlies went on a 3-0 run to take the game and the match.
Tiffany Matchett led the Cowgirls with 18 kills while Staffler had 16 and Norris finished with 12.
Celina Naranjo led NMHU with 27 assists while
Samantha Sjogren had 20.
Trinity Saiz led the Cowgirls with 28 digs while Matchett had 24 and Norris and Naranjo had 10 apiece.
Taley Ferrari led the team with five blocks.
The Cowgirls host Fort Lewis 6 p.m. Saturday in their annual Dig Pink game at Wilson Complex.
