Cowgirls score first, but fall at Regis

DENVER --- The New Mexico Highlands women's soccer team scored first, but couldn't hold on as the Cowgirls fell to Regis University 3-1 on Friday afternoon at Regis Match Pitch.

NMHU (0-9 overall, 0-6 RMAC) got on the board in the fifth minute when Nitza Rodriguez took advantage of a misplayed ball in the back and chipped it over the keeper for a 1-0 Cowgirl lead. It was Rodriguez's second goal of the season.

The Rangers (6-3-2, 5-2) evened the game up in the 12th minute when Cat Devitt headed a ball in on a cross from Emily Ross. Regis took the lead in the 33rd, again on a header, to make it 2-1. Regis added an insurance goal in the second half to make the final 3-1.

The Cowgirls were outshot 21-7 (including 11-4 on shots on goal). Rodriguez and Janis Martinez led NMHU with two shots apiece. Briana Ruelas finished with eight saves at keeper for the Cowgirls.

NMHU continues RMAC play in South Dakota on Sunday as they travel to take on Black Hills State at noon.
