Box Score HOBBS, N.M. --- The New Mexico Highlands women's basketball team used a huge run to end the third quarter to hold on to defeat University of the Southwest 66-49 on Monday night at the Maddox Student Life Center in Hobbs, New Mexico.
The Cowgirls (1-2) jumped out to a 22-7 lead after the first quarter on the NAIA Mustangs (2-4), but USW slowly continued to trim the lead until NMHU led by just one at 34-33 with 3:43 left in the third quarter.
But NMHU went on a 13-0 run to take a 47-33 lead into the fourth quarter and cruised to the 15-point victory.
Jordyn Lewis had a big game for the Cowgirls, finishing with 21 points, including going 5-for-11 from 3-point range.
DeAvion Allen finished with 14 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals,
Ari Baca had 12 points and seven rebounds and
Brianna Stewart finished with 10 points and four rebounds.
Next for the Cowgirls is their home opener 2 p.m. Saturday against this same USW team at Wilson Complex.
