CANYON, Texas --- The New Mexico Highlands women's basketball team fell to Eastern New Mexico 89-54 Saturday afternoon on the final day of the Pak-A-Sak Thanksgiving Classic in Canyon, Texas.
The Cowgirls (2-5) fell behind 19-4 at the first media timeout in the first quarter, but back-to-back 3-pointers from
Brianna Stewart and
Jordyn Lewis cut the deficit back to single digits at 19-10. But a 10-2 run by the Greyhounds (4-1) to end the first quarter had NMHU down 29-12 at the end of the first quarter. NMHU wouldn't get within 16 points of ENMU the rest of the contest.
Lewis led the Cowgirls with 17 points and added five rebounds. Stewart had 14 points, including going 4-for-7 from 3-point range, to go along with five rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block.
DeAvion Allen led the team with nine rebounds while
Kish Chandler added a team-best four assists.
NMHU shot 29.5 percent from the field, including 27.6 percent (8-for-29) from 3-point range. ENMU shot 52.9 percent from the field, including 48 percent (12-for-25) from beyond the arc. The Greyhounds outrebounded the Cowgirls 42-32 and NMHU committed 20 turnovers compared to 15 for ENMU (though the Greyhounds outscored the Cowgirls 26-3 on points off turnovers). Jena Mehlbrech led ENMU with 15 points.
The Cowgirls open Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play next 5 p.m. next Saturday at home against CSU-Pueblo.
