Cowboys wrap up 2018 with home game versus NNMC

LAS VEGAS, N.M. --- The New Mexico Highlands men's basketball team looks to wrap the calendar year on a high note as the Cowboys host Northern New Mexico 7 p.m. Wednesday at Wilson Complex.

NMHU and the Eagles played earlier this season with the Cowboys winning on the road in Espanola 94-82 on Nov. 19. NMHU outscored NNMC 49-34 in the second half to overcome a three-point halftime deficit. Raquan Mitchell and Gerad Davis led NMHU with 19 points apiece with Mitchell adding six assists and five rebounds while Davis had five rebounds and three assists. Bryce Simmons led NNMC with 17 points to go alogn with five assists and three rebounds.

THE COWBOYS COMING INTO THIS WEEK | SEASON STATS
The Cowboys saw their seven-game winning streak snapped on Friday as they lost on the road to Dixie State 83-65 before bouncing back to defeat Westminster 79-70 on Saturday in Salt Lake City. In the loss Friday, the Cowboys shot a season-worst 32.8 percent from the field (actually shooting better from 3-point range at 11-for-33) while Dixie State shot 55.4 percent. In the victory Saturday, NMHU shot 45.6 percent and built a 24-point lead early in the second half and held on for a nine-point victory over Westminster.

On the season, Gerad Davis - who suffered from foul trouble throughout the weekend - leads the team in scoring at 19.9 points per game while also averaging 5.2 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.7 steals per game. Raquan Mitchell averaged 20.5 points per game over the weekend to improve his scoring average to 17.3 points per game to go along with 4.3 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.4 steals per game. He's also shooting 40.3 percent from 3-point range. Jordan Jones is averaging 14.2 points, 3.2 rebounds, 1.7 steals, 1.0 assists and 0.7 blocks per game while Nnamdi Okoro is at 10.3 points, 8.0 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per contest.

As a team, the Cowboys are averaging 88.2 points per game and are outscoring their opponent by 9.1 points per game. NMHU is also shooting 47.1 percent from the field and hitting 11 3-pointers per game. The Cowboys are also forcing 17.7 turnovers per contest - 6.5 more turnovers than they are committing.

ABOUT NORTHERN NEW MEXICO | SEASON STATS
The Eagles head into Wednesday's game after falling to another RMAC team on Monday night - losing to UC Colorado Springs 99-82 in Colorado Springs. The Eagles fell behind 58-35 at the half before outscoring the Cougars by six in the second half to fall by 17. Estevan Martinez led NNMC with 16 points while Bryce Simmons had 15 points, six assists and four rebounds while Tyrique Weaver added 13 points.

Prior to Monday's contest, the Eagles have averaged 85.3 points per game while allowing 86.7 points. The team shoots 43.9 percent from the field, including 33.1 percent from 3-point range.

Naquwan Solomon leads NNMC in scoring at 15.9 points per contest along with averaging 5.9 rebounds and 1.0 steals. Makye Richard is also averaging double figures at 13.6 points per game as is Simmons at 11.5.
