LAS VEGAS, N.M. --- The New Mexico Highlands men's basketball team looks to keep the momentum rolling this weekend as the Cowboys host Fort Lewis (7 p.m. Friday) and Adams State (7 p.m. Saturday) at Wilson Complex.
THE COWBOYS COMING INTO THIS WEEK | SEASON STATS
The Cowboys won their fifth game in a row when it picked up an 89-84 win over CSU-Pueblo in their RMAC opener on Saturday at Wilson Complex. NMHU overcame early shooting woes (missed its first nine 3-pointers) thanks to forcing 21 turnovers and turning that into 24 points compared to committing just seven turnovers.
The Cowboys continue to lead the RMAC and are 21st in NCAA Division II in scoring at 89 points per game and are second in the RMAC in scoring margin (plus-10.0 points per game). NMHU is third in the RMAC in field goal percentage (47.1 percent) and 3-pointers made per game (9.5), fourth in assists (14.8), second in steals (8.8) and first in turnover margin (plus-5.67) and assist-to-turnover ration (1.5).
Gerad Davis leads the Cowboys in scoring at 21.2 points per game (third in the RMAC) along with averaging 6.0 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.5 steals per game.
Raquan Mitchell is second on the team in scoring (15.0 ppg - ninth in the RMAC) while also averaging 5.2 rebounds, 3.7 assists (ninth in the RMAC) and 1.8 steals (eighth in the RMAC) per game.
Jordan Jones is averaging 13.8 points and 1.5 steals while
Nnamdi Okoro is averaging 11.3 points to go along with a team-best 8.2 rebounds (third in the RMAC), 1.4 blocks per game and is second in the conference with a 70.5 field goal percentage.
ABOUT FORT LEWIS | SEASON STATS
The Skyhawks had their three-game winning streak snapped when they opened RMAC play on the road with a 68-60 overtime loss at Adams State. Marquel Beasley led the team with 17 points to go along with seven rebounds and two steals. Riley Farris had 13 points while Alex Semadeni had 11 and Keven Biggs had 10.
The loss comes after the Skyhawks defeated Northern New Mexico (83-60, Nov. 14), University of the Southwest (65-62, Nov. 16) and Haskell (88-70). Fort Lewis was also in Albuquerque at the same time as the Cowboys to start the season and beat Eastern New Mexico (82-74) and lost to Western New Mexico (74-70). As a team, the Skyhawks are averaging 74.7 points per game while allowing 68.0.
Beasley leads the team in scoring at 19.8 points per game (fifth in the RMAC) while also averaging 7.2 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game. Farris is averaging 13.2 points while Semadeni is averaging 10.8 points per game along with 7.3 rebounds per contest.
ABOUT ADAMS STATE | SEASON STATS
The Grizzlies snapped a five-game losing streak to start the season (with four of those losses by single digits) by defeating Fort Lewis 68-60 in overtime in their RMAC opener at home Saturday. Davere Creighton had a double-double with 17 pionts and 12 rebounds while Shemar Johnson had 17 points, five rebounds and three steals to lead the way for the Grizzlies.
Adams State opened the season with losses to UT Permian Basin (101-98) and No. 4 West Texas A&M (112-87). The Grizzlies did have an exhibition game win over Northern New Mexico (82-79) on the road on Nov. 13 before losing an exhibition game against Wayland Baptist (84-80, Nov. 16). The Grizzlies then fell to MSU Texas (92-83, Nov. 24) before dropping both games at the Angelo State Thanksgiving Tournament to Central Baptist (107-99, Nov. 23) and Angelo State (92-83, Nov. 24). The Grizzlies are last in the RMAC in points allowed at 91.2 points per contest, but are third in scoring at 84.3.
John Dewey leads the Grizzlies in scoring at 19.7 points per game and is their top 3-point threat with a team-best 11 3-pointers (and shooting 40.7 percent from beyond the arc. He's also shooting 95.1 percent (39-for-41) from the free throw line, is grabbing 4.5 rebounds and leads the team at 3.8 assists per game. Rickey Norris is second on teh team in scoring (14.7) and leads the team in rebounding (6.3) and steals (2.4).
