LAS VEGAS, N.M. --- After a month full of matches on the road, the New Mexico Highlands volleyball team finally plays its home opener 7 p.m. Friday as the Cowgirls take on Black Hills State at Wilson Complex. NMHU hosts South Dakota Mines the next day at 6 p.m. at Wilson Complex.
NMHU started the season with 11 consecutive road matches, and after dropping its first four, the Cowgirls have gone 4-3 - including winning three of its last four (and a 2-1 start in RMAC play).
LAST TIME OUT FOR COWGIRLS (4-7, 2-1) | SEASON STATS
The Cowgirls hit the road for a mid-week contest Tuesday to take on CSU-Pueblo, and after dropping the first game, came back to take the next three to beat the ThunderWolves 3-1 (19-25, 25-19, 25-22, 25-21).
Tiffany Matchett finished the match with 13 kills to go along with 14 digs.
Cynthia Norris had eight kills,
Julie Staffler finished with seven kills and
Stacy Johnson had six.
Celina Naranjo had a team-high 21 assists while
Soleil Gandara added 14,
Elena Rivera led the team with 33 digs and
Camryn Nelson had two kills, three aces and 11 digs.
Matchett leads the Cowgirls is kills per set at 2.44 while Staffler (1.94), Norris (1.79), Nelson (1.68) and Nelson (1.40) are all averaging more than one per set. Naranjo averages a team-best 4.38 assists per set while Rivera's 5.15 digs per set is tops on the team and third in the RMAC.
ABOUT BLACK HILLS STATE (3-6, 0-2) | SEASON STATS
The Yellow Jackets have dropped their last three matches, including their first two RMAC contests last weekend at home to Westminster College (3-1) and Dixie State (3-0). BHSU has a pair of players averaging more than two kills per set in 5-foot-8 Madison Hoopman (2.39) and 5-foot-10 Jadie DeLange (2.35) while 5-foot-9 Sierra Studgelmeyer isn't far behind at 1.94. Laurel Lech is the team's top setter at 8.61 assists per set (seventh in the RMAC).
ABOUT SOUTH DAKOTA MINES (3-7, 1-1) | SEASON STATS
The Hardrockers, who take on CSU-Pueblo on Friday before coming to Las Vegas on Saturday, have won three of their last four matches - including splitting their RMAC-opening weekend. South Dakota Mines lost its RMAC opener 3-0 to Dixie State at home Friday before sweeping Westminster College the next day. The Hardrockers feature the RMAC leader in kills per set in 6-foot-1 freshman Dana Thomson who is averaging 4.83 per game - more than a kill per set better than the next player in the conference. Shyann Bastian leads the team in assists per game at 6.48.
