LAKEWOOD, Colo. --- The New Mexico Highlands volleyball team lost to Colorado Christian 3-0 (25-22, 25-15, 28-26) Saturday evening on the road.
After winning the first two sets, it looked like the Cougars (6-10 overall, 4-3 RMAC) were going to run away with the third set as they led 17-9.
But the Cowgirls (5-10, 3-4) took advantage of CCU's attack errors and went on a 6-0 run to cut the lead to 17-15. The game remained close as CCU held a 22-20 lead before an attack error, a
Tiffany Matchett kill, a
Bayley Willis kill and a
Camryn Nelson ace suddenly gave NMHU set point at 24-22. But the Cowgirls couldn't clinch it as the game eventually was tied 26-26 before two straight points by the Cougars clinched the set and the match.
Matchett led the Cowgirls with 10 kills to go along with 15 digs (tied for the team high with
Elena Rivera).
Camryn Nelson added six kills while
Julie Staffler had five.
Celina Naranjo led the team with 13 assists while
Soleil Gandara had 12.
Taley Ferrari had a team-high three blocks.
The Cowgirls hit the road again next week (they've played 13 of their 15 games away from NMHU) as they take on Fort Lewis 7 p.m. Friday and Adams State on Saturday.
