SPEARFISH, S.D. --- The New Mexico Highlands women's basketball team made a strong run at the end of the second quarter to keep it close at the half, but the Cowgirls fell to Black Hills State 83-64 on Friday night at the Donald E. Young Center.

The Cowgirls (4-15 overall, 2-10 RMAC) trailed the Yellow Jackets (11-5, 7-5) 30-19 with 7:02 remaining in the second quarter before a pair of
Allyah George free throws ignited a 12-0 run for NMHU – which included back-to-back 3-pointers from
Jordyn Lewis and a pair of free throws by Lewis with 4:15 remaining (she had 10 of the team's 12 points in the run) to take a 31-30 lead.

Black Hills State answered with an 8-0 run to regain the lead and eventually took a 38-33 lead into the half. The Yellow Jackets went on to outscore the Cowgirls 45-31 in the second half (including 18-10 in the third quarter) to pull away for the 19-point victory.

The Cowgirls were helped by shooting 9-for-21 from 3-point range, but were outrebounded 52-28 – including giving up 21 offensive rebounds that led to 17 second-chance points (the Cowgirls had no second-chance points on six offensive rebounds).

Lewis paced the Cowgirls with 25 points, including going 5-for-10 from 3-point range. She also had four rebounds and three steals. George had 14 points and five rebounds while
Kish Chandler had nine points and
DeAvion Allen added eight points, five rebounds and three assists.

NMHU concludes its trip through South Dakota 3:30 p.m. Saturday as they take on South Dakota Mines.
