Santa Fe, NM --- The New Mexico Highlands Women's Soccer team lost a pair of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matches over the weekend against Regis and Black Hills State in Santa Fe, NM.
AGAINST REGIS: The Rangers found themselves ahead of the Cowgirls early as they scored two goals within the first 20 minutes of play. One of those goals came off a rebound after keeper
Katherine Scott saved the initial attempt. The Rangers would go on to win the game 4-0 after scoring two more goals in the second half.
The Rangers defense would hold the Cowgirls to 10 shots on the game with 4 of them being on goal. Victoria led the squad with three shots; all three of them on goal.
Hannah Sayyeau (2 shots, 1 on goal),
Janis Martinez (2 shots),
Bryana Garcia (1 shot),
Ariana Castillo (1 shot), and
Izzy Pilon (1 shot) would all aid the Cowgirl offense. Scott would finish the match with 6 saves after facing 22 shots with 10 of them on goal.
AGAINST BLACK HILLS STATE: The Yellow Jackets and the Cowgirls battled on Sunday morning as the game winning goal came in the second half as a foul was called inside the penalty box.
The first goal of the game came as BHSU Mikalya Hernandez scored as she attempted to center the ball off a corner kick. The Cowgirls would answer right back as
Janis Martinez would score from 20-yards out off a pass from
Monique Nevarez. The game would not be tied for long as another Yellow Jacket goal came 5 minutes after. The Cowgirls would finish the half strong as
Cheyenne Delgado would find Martinez to tie the game right before halftime.
The second half was a defensive stand for both squads as the only goal came off a penalty kick in the 63
rd minute of play. The Cowgirls would lose on a heart-breaker 3-2.
The Cowgirls would attempt the most shots this season in 23 with 10 of them being on goal. Martinez led the way as she scored both goals for the Cowgirls off 8 shots with 4 being on goal.

Hannah Sayyeau (3 shots, 2 on goal),
Tianna Castillo (3 shots, 2 on goal),
Ariana Castillo (3 shots),
Autumn Stewart (1 shot on goal),
Bryana Garcia (1 shot), and
Abril Rodriguez (1 shot) would all aid the Cowgirls offense in the heart-breaking loss to the Yellow Jackets.
Karina Vega would get the start for the Cowgirls in the goal as she finished the game with 7 saves after facing 17 shots with 10 of them being on goal.
The Cowgirls will be back in action next weekend as they travel to Grand Junction, CO on Friday to take on Colorado Mesa at 7 pm and Gunnison, CO on Sunday to take on Western Colorado at 1 pm.
