Grand Junction, CO --- The New Mexico Highlands soccer team traveled to Grand Junction, CO over the weekend where they fell to Colorado Mesa 6-0 on Friday and lost to Western Colorado 3-2 in OT on Sunday.
AGAINST MESA: The Mavericks (7-4-1, 4-3-1 RMAC) started out hot against the Cowgirls as Zoe Peterson was able to score in the 12
th minute of action. The Mavericks would dominate the rest of the match as they would manage 5 more goals in a 6-0 shut out over the Cowgirls. NMHU was able to get off 3 shots with 1 being on goal.
Ariana Castillo managed 2 of those shots with 1 of them being on target.
Janis Martinez took the other shot for the Cowgirls. Keeper
Katherine Scott received the start for the Cowgirls as she allowed 6 goals and tallied 11 saves.
AGAINST WESTERN COLORADO: The Cowgirls and the Mountaineers would find themselves in a defense stand as the game ended in the 14
th minute of OT.
The Cowgirls started out the game with the lead as
Janis Martinez found the back of the net in the 27
th minute of the first half. The Mountaineers would answer right back two minutes later with a goal of their own. The Cowgirls managed 11 shots with 7 of them on target in the first half.
Again, the Cowgirls would take the lead as
Ariana Castillo connected on a goal in the 63
rd minute of action. The Mountaineers would score another goal right after, and tied the game at 2-2 with a little under 20 minutes left in the game.
The teams would hold on to head in to overtime tied at 2. The Mountaineers dominated in the OT period as they managed 4 shots to the Cowgirls 1. The Mountaineers would score off of a corner kick in the 14
th minute of OT, and win the game 3-2.
The Cowgirls managed 20 shots, with 11 of them being on goal.
Janis Martinez led the way for the Cowgirls as she scored her 5
th goal of the season and managed 7 shots with 4 of them being on goal.
Ariana Castillo continued her tenacity on the offensive end for the Cowgirls as she managed a goal off 5 shots, with 3 of them on goal.
Lareina Romero (3 shots on goal),
Alexandra Rodriguez (2 shots), and
Victoria Mares (1 shot on goal) would all aid the Cowgirls offense.
Karina Vega started in the goal for the Cowgirls as she allowed 3 goals and tallied 3 saves.
The Cowgirls will be back in action next weekend, where they will travel to Utah to take on Dixie State and Westminster.
