Las Vegas, NM --- The New Mexico Highlands Volleyball team lost a pair of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matches over the weekend against Colorado Christian and #17 Regis at the Wilson Complex.
AGAINST THE COUGARS: The Cowgirls fell in three straight sets to the Cougars (25-22, 26-24, 25-20), but not without a fight. The Cowgirls would battle the Cougars in the first two sets as they found themselves tied at 20-20 in both sets. The Cougars would take advantage of key mistakes made by the Cowgirls, to eventually win the sets. In the third set, the Cougars jumped to an early 10-6 lead, and the teams would rally back and forth until the Cougars would finish the set 25-20.
The Cowgirls finished the night with 37 kills, 9 blocks, 4 aces, and 33 digs.
Taley Ferrari was a threat for the Cowgirls at the net as she led the team in kills with 9 and also in blocks with 5.
Bayley Willis and
Sierra Foley were able to tally 6 kills each. Libero
Bryanna Lopez recorded 11 digs and setter
Celina Naranjo aided with 21 assists.
AGAINST THE RANGERS: The Cowgirls (1-13, 0-7 RMAC) showed that they can compete with top ranked teams as they were able to take a set from #17 Regis Rangers in a 3-1 loss. During the second set, the Rangers found themselves at set point 24-19. A kill from
Taley Ferrari, two attacking errors from Regis, an ace from
Bryanna Lopez, and two more attacking errors by Regis would give the Cowgirls a 25-24 lead over the Rangers. The Rangers would tie the set at 25-25 and the Cowgirls would use two errors from the Rangers to take the set 27-25 and tie the match at 1-1. Regis would eventually take the next two sets and win the match 3-1.
Taley Ferrari continued her dominance at the net with 3 blocks and also recorded 5 kills.
Stacy Johnson tallied 4 kills and also led the squad with 6 blocks and
Sierra Foley led the team in kills with 12 and also tallied 3 digs.
Bryanna Lopez continued to be the backbone for the Cowgirls defense with 16 digs on the night. Setter
Celina Naranjo aided with 24 assist and also tallied 7 digs.
The Cowgirls will be back in action next weekend at the Wilson Complex where they will host Adams State at 7 pm on Friday October 11
th and Fort Lewis at 6 pm on Saturday October 12
th.
