Cowgirls finish strong, but come up short at UCCS

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. --- The New Mexico Highlands women's basketball team fell to UC Colorado Springs 71-62 on Saturday night at Gallogly Events Center.

It was a rough second quarter for NMHU (4-22 overall, 2-16 RMAC) that turned out to be the difference as the Mountain Lions (13-12, 12-7) outscored the Cowgirls 26-10 in the period to take a 49-26 lead at the half. It also didn't help the NMHU cause that UCCS was scorching hot from beyond the arc in the first half – going 10-for-14.

The Cowgirls didn't go away and went on to outscore UCCS 20-6 in the fourth quarter to make the final margin of defeat single digits at nine points.

Amari Terry had a big night for the Cowgirls, finishing with a season-high 19 points, nine rebounds and five assists – all NMHU highs. Brianna Stewart added 15 points on 5-for-6 shooting (she went 2-for-2 from 3-point range and 3-for-3 from the line) while Allyah George had 14 points, six rebounds and three assists.

The Cowgirls return for their final two home games of the season next week – hosting MSU Denver 5 p.m. Friday and Chadron State 7 p.m. Saturday (Senior Night) at Wilson Complex.
