Cowboy bats hot throughout, Bedsole tosses shutout in doubleheader sweep

LAS VEGAS, N.M. --- The New Mexico Highlands baseball team came out swinging against Fort Hays State on Friday while allowing runs in just one inning during a doubleheader sweep of the Tigers, 19-0 and 16-7, at Brandt Field.

The Cowboys (2-4) scored a run in every inning but one on Friday, including a 12-run fifth inning against the Tigers (0-3) in the first game that led to a 19-0 win – the most runs the Cowboys have scored since scoring 21 against Colorado Christian in May of 2017.

It was Kyle Bedsole for the Cowboys that was dealing on the mound as he tossed a complete-game, seven-inning shutout – allowing five hits with seven strikeouts and one walk. At the plate, Gaylan Young came up a home run short of the cycle, going 4-for-4 with a triple, two doubles, four runs and two RBI. Auggie Francis blasted his second home run of the season while adding two RBI and three runs, Jared Brown went 1-for-2 with three RBI and two runs, Carlos Ramirez drove in two and scored two, Garrett Hammer went 1-for-2 with three RBI and two runs, Kalen Hammer was 2-for-4 with a triple, double three RBI and two runs while Justin DeHoog went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run.

In game two, the Cowboys jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first inning and led 8-0 after two before the Tigers scored seven runs in the top of the third to cut the lead to 8-7. But NMHU scored eight unanswered runs over the next four innings to pull away for the 16-7 victory.

Francis had a big day, going 5-for-5 with a home run (his team-best third), triple, double, four runs and six RBI. Young went 2-for-3 with a home run, double, two runs and three RBI, Brown went 2-for-4 with a home run and two runs and Carlos Ramirez doubled twice and scored a run. JT Mossberg picked up the win, going 2.1 innings in relief and giving up two runs (no earned runs) on three hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Carl Shonrock was solid in relief as well, going two innings and giving up no runs and two hits with a strikeout and no walk.

The Cowboys and Tigers play two more Saturday starting at 11:30 a.m. at Brandt Field.
