PUEBLO, Colo. --- The New Mexico Highlands softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader against Colorado School of Mines, 3-2 and 16-2, on Friday at Pueblo South High School.
The Cowgirls (1-8 overall, 1-5 RMAC) in the first game looked like they were going to snag the opener as NMHU broke a scoreless tie in the top of the sixth when
Nicole Correia hit a two-out, two-run homer to left center field to make it 2-0.
But the Orediggers (5-8, 4-1) – who had been held to just one hit by NMHU starter
Belinda Gonzalez through five innings – came back and scored three runs on four hits to take a 3-2 lead heading to the seventh.
NMHU appeared it may bounce back as
Leah Osborn started the seventh with a double, but she was eventually stranded at third as the Cowgirls fell by a run.
Breanna Cabrera was the only Cowgirl with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with a double. Gonzalez picked up the loss, going six innings and giving up three runs on five hits with four strikeouts and two walks.
In game two, the Orediggers scored five runs in the first, five in the second and six in the third to take a 16-2 lead and held on for the five-inning, run-rule win.
Victoria Mata went 2-for-3 with a stolen base for the Cowgirls while
Megan Malwitz was 1-for-2 with an RBI.
Megan Jesionowski got the loss, going 0.1 innings and giving up four runs.
NMHU and Mines wrap up their four-game series with a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. Saturday at Pueblo South High School.
