Cowboys drop series opener to MSU Denver

LAS VEGAS, N.M. --- The New Mexico Highlands baseball team couldn't silence the bats of MSU Denver as the Cowboys fell 25-8 Saturday afternoon at Brandt Field.
 
The Roadrunners (9-7 overall, 3-2 RMAC) scored multiple runs in four of the first five innings as the Cowboys (7-10, 0-5) 19-7 after five innings. The lead was cut to 5-4 after NMHU got RBIs from Travis Spruiell, Kalen Hammer, Auggie Francis and Joe Cilladi in the second inning. But MSU Denver scored four runs each in the third and fourth innings before scoring six in the fifth to build a commanding lead.
 
The Cowboys committed a season-high six errors – leading to 10 unearned runs scored by the Roadrunners.
 
Francis paced the Cowboys at the plate, going 4-for-4 with two RBI and a run. Justin DeHoog went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI, Cilladi was 2-for-5 with two RBI and a double, Jared Brown was 2-for-4 with a run, Spruiell was 2-for-4 with a double, RBI and two runs and Kalen Hammer went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run.
 
Kyle Bedsole got the loss, going 2.2 innings and giving up nine runs (seven earned) on seven hits with three strikeouts and three walks.
 
The Cowboys and Roadrunners continue their series with a doubleheader starting at noon Sunday at Brandt Field.
