LAS VEGAS, N.M. --- The New Mexico Highlands softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Chadron State on Friday, falling 6-4 and 13-1 at Cowgirl Field.
Â
In the opener, the Cowgirls (6-15 overall, 5-10 RMAC) twice fell behind to only tie the game shortly after – including a game-tying RBI double by
Olivia Muniz in the second inning and RBI singles by
Leah Osborn and
Nicole Correia in the third to tie it at 3-3 against the Eagles (8-23, 5-16).
Â
But Chadron State used a pair of homers for a three-run fourth to take a 6-3 lead and the Cowgirls only mustered one more run – an RBI single by
Desiree Madrid in the fourth – to fall by two.
Â
Victoria Mata, Madrid, Osborn, Correia and Muniz each had a pair of hits for the Cowgirls.
Belinda Gonzalez picked up the loss, going the distance and giving up six runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and three walks.
Â
In the second game, the Eagles scored 12 runs in the third inning to pull away for the 13-1 five-inning, run-rule victory over NMHU. Muniz and
Angelina Guthro had two hits apiece to account for four of the Cowgirls' five hits in the contest. Madrid drove in the lone Cowgirl run in the fifth inning on a fielder's choice.
Desiree Bogarin got the loss, giving up 10 runs (five earned) on seven hits with two strikeouts and three walks.
Â
The teams wrap up their four-game series with a doubleheader starting 11 a.m. Saturday at Cowgirl Field.
