Cowgirls fall in extras in game one, drop both games to Adams State

LAS VEGAS, N.M. --- The New Mexico Highlands softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Adams State, 8-7 in extra innings and 9-1, on Monday at Cowgirl Field.

In the first game, the Cowgirls (8-23 overall, 7-18 RMAC) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a three-run homer by Leah Osborn. Adams State (10-31, 10-19) bounced back to score two runs in the third inning and another two in the fifth to take a 4-3 advantage.

But NMHU bounced back in the bottom of the fifth as a two-run single by Breanna Cabrera gave NMHU a 5-4 lead heading into the sixth. Again the Grizzlies answered – this time with a three-run sixth inning – to take a 7-5 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.

The Cowgirls didn't go away, however, as Angelina Guthro singled before Brooklynn DeLozier lined a two-run homer over the left field wall to tie the game 7-7. But the Grizzlies hit a solo homer to lead off the eighth and NMHU didn't answer and dropped the opener Monday.

DeLozier finished 2-for-4 with a homer, two RBI and two runs to lead the Cowgirls. Brianna Velasquez picked up the loss, going four innings and giving up three runs on four hits with a strikeout.

In game two, NMHU again took a lead in the first inning thanks to a Nicole Correia RBI groundout – but the Grizzlies scored nine unanswered runs (including five in the sixth inning) to force the eight-run run rule.

Sydney Kouns led NMHU at the plate, going 3-for-3 to collect half of the team's hits. Belinda Gonzalez got the loss, going six innings and giving up nine runs (eight earned) on 12 hits with five strikeouts and two walks.

These were the final home games for the Cowgirls this season as they spend the final two weekends on the road – starting with traveling to take on Dixie State on Friday to begin a four-game series.
