GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. --- The New Mexico Highlands baseball team took an early 1-0 lead on No. 1 Colorado Mesa in the top of the fourth on a
Gaylan Young solo homer, but the Cowboys committed three errors in what turned into a six run bottom of the fourth for the Mavericks as NMHU fell 12-2 Thursday night at Suplizio Field.
Â
The contest was scoreless until the fourth inning when Young hit a breaking ball on the first pitch he saw over the wall in dead center field to give the Cowboys (14-25 overall, 7-18 RMAC) a 1-0 lead on the Mavericks (32-7, 20-5).
Â
However, the lead didn't last as in the bottom half of the fourth CMU took advantage of three NMHU errors and a passed ball to score six runs in the inning. NMHU got a run back in the fifth on a two-out, RBI single from
Auggie Francis, but the Mavs scored four in the sixth and two more in the eighth to come away with the 12-2 win.
Â
Francis picked up half of the Cowboys' hits, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a double.
Kaleb Whitlock picked up the loss, giving up six runs (two earned) on seven hits with a strikeout and five walks. Overall, the Cowboys committed four errors leading to six unearned runs.
Â
NMHU and CMU continue their series with a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. on Friday.
