Cowgirls Drop Season Opener to Greyhounds

Las Vegas, NM – The Cowgirls opened their 2020 season against the Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds in a doubleheader on Saturday, February 1st.

Game 1 of the day was a hard fought pitching battle between the Cowgirls and Greyhounds. The Cowgirls came up short falling by a final score of 2-1 to the Greyhounds. Senior right-handed pitcher, Belinda Gonzalez got the start in the circle for the Cowgirls. Gonzalez pitched 5 complete innings, faced 24 batters, allowed 5 hits, 1 earned run and struck out 3 Greyhounds. Freshman designated player, Taylor Fish, batted in the Cowgirls lone run of the game in the bottom of the 5th inning with a double to right field, scoring Megan Gutierrez. Senior infielder, Leah Osborn, and sophomore outfielder, Victoria Mata, each ended the game going 2-3 at the plate.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the game was called after the 4th inning due to lack of daylight. According to NCAA softball regulations, a game must complete 5 innings to be considered a complete game. Game 2 was not an official game since the Cowgirls and Greyhounds were unable to complete 5 innings. After four complete innings in the second game, the Cowgirls trailed the Greyhounds 20-11. Junior, Ashlea Ortega, went 2-2 at the plate with 3 RBIs.
Freshman infielder, Carlee Gonzales went 2-3 with 2 RBIs.
Leah Osborn also went 2-2 at the plate with one run batted in.

The Cowgirls look to bounce back this weekend as they travel to Lubbock, Texas for the Lubbock Christian Invitational. The Cowgirls will play six games on the weekend starting with Newman University and Oklahoma Baptist University Friday, February 7, 2020 at 5pm and 7pm.
