Las Vegas, NM ---The New Mexico Highlands Softball team lost the first two games of a four game series with UCCS on Saturday afternoon.

GAME 1 RECAP – The Cowgirls got off to a slow start after they allowed the Mountain Lions to score in the second inning off of a sacrifice fly to right field. The Mountain Lions would add to their lead in the 3rd inning with a homerun that brought in 2 runs – and a 4-0 lead.

The Mountain Lions would add 3 more runs in the 4
th inning before NMHU
Victoria Mata brought in
Angelina Guthro on a hit to third base.

The Mountain Lions added 1 run in the 6
th inning and 7
th innings while holding the Cowgirls scoreless and would go on to win the game 9-1.

The Cowgirls finished the game with 5 hits and 0 errors while the Mountain Lions finished with 12 hits with 9 RBI and 0 errors.

Victoria Mata, Camryn Ziegler,
Ashlea Ortega,
Leah Osborn, and
Angelina Guthro all went 1 for 3 on the game while Mata brought the only run in.

GAME 2 RECAP –

The Mountain Lions and Cowgirls were in a back-an-forth affair as both teams held each other scoreless through 4 innings before UCCS Santos broke the tie with a 2-run homerun. The Mountain Lions would add 1 run after that to close out the inning with a 3-0 lead.

The Mountain Lions would go on to win 3-0 as the Cowgirls would tally 3 hits. NMHU pitcher
Belinda Gonzalez (0-7) threw for 6 1/3 inning while recording 7 strikeouts and walked 1 batter.
Ashlea Ortega finished 2 for 3 on the day with 2 singles and a stolen base.
Megan Gutierrez went 1 for 3 on the day with one single in the 7
th inning.

The Cowgirls will continue the 4 game series tomorrow with the games scheduled to begin at 11am in Las Vegas, NM.
