LAS VEGAS, N.M. --- The New Mexico Highlands women's soccer team dropped a pair of RMAC contests over the weekend, falling to Fort Lewis 4-1 and Colorado Christian 3-1.
On Friday against Fort Lewis, the Skyhawks scored goals in the sixth, 43rd, 48th and 69th minute to take a 4-0 lead before the Cowgirls got on the board with a
Monique Nevarez goal - assisted by
Bryana Garcia - to make the final 4-1.
The Cowgirls had their chances, taking just as many shots as the Skyhawks (13-13), but 10 of the FLC's shots were on target compared to five for NMHU.
Valeria Baca led the team with four shots. In goal,
Karina Vega made six saves.
On Sunday against CCU, it was NMHU taking a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute as
Nitza Rodriguez scored on an assist from
Kiarra Hovis. That lead held until halftime before in the opening minutes of the second half, CCU scored in the 48th and 49th minute to take a 2-1 lead and added an insurance goal in the 57th minute to make the final 3-1.
CCU finished with 13 shots compared to eight for the Cowgirls. Rodriguez led the team with three shots. Vega finished with four saves for the Cowgirls.
NMHU returns to action 2 p.m. Friday as it hosts Western Colorado University at Old Memorial Middle School.
