LAS VEGAS, N.M. --- The New Mexico Highlands women's soccer team picked up its first win of the season, defeating Western Colorado 2-1 Friday at Old Memorial Middle School.
The Cowgirls (1-6 overall, 1-4 RMAC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half after Desire Hermosillo scored her first goal of the season in the 17th minute before
Valeria Baca converted a penalty kick in the 28th minute to make it 2-0 NMHUÂ - her second goal of the year.
The score remained that way until the 68th minute when Western Colorado's (4-5, 1-3) Natasha Kasozi scored to cut the Cowgirl lead to 2-1.
But NMHU held off the Mountaineers to come away with its first victory of the season.
The Cowgirls outshot Western Colorado 24-9 - including 16-6 on shots on goal.
Karina Vega picked up five saves in goal for the Cowgirls.
NMHUÂ returns to action next Friday when it travels to take on MSU Denver.
