LAS VEGAS, N.M. --- The New Mexico Highlands women's basketball team outscored University of the Southwest in each quarter to come away with a 66-47 victory Monday in its home opener Monday at Wilson Complex.
The victory also is the first for head coach
Garett Sherman and breaks NMHU's 24-game losing streak.
The Cowgirls (1-2 overall) led the Mustangs (0-2) 15-13 after the first, 33-27 at the half, 49-38 after the third before outscoring them 17-9 in the fourth quarter to come away with the 19-point victory.
NMHU held USW to 29.6 percent shooting from the field and forced twice as many turnovers (16) as it committed (eight).
Maiah Rivas led the Cowgirls with 16 points (going 7-for-8 from the free throw line) to go along with eight rebounds and three assists.
Jordyn Lewis had 13 points while
Shania Johnson added 10 points and four rebounds.
The Cowgirls return to action Saturday as they travel to take on Texas A&M International.
