LAREDO, Texas --- The New Mexico Highlands women's basketball team used a big third quarter and early fourth quarter to erase a double-digit deficit and take the lead, but fell short on the road at Texas A&M International 67-53 Saturday afternoon.
The Cowgirls (1-3) trailed by as much as 16 points in the second quarter before outscoring the Dustdevils (2-0) 21-10 in the third quarter to cut the deficit to one at 45-44.
NMHU took the lead when
Jordyn Lewis converted a three-point play with 8:06 left in the final quarter to make it 49-47 Cowgirls.
But a 9-0 run by TAMI over the next five-plus minutes gave the Dustdevils the lead for good as NMHU couldn't recover.
Lewis led the Cowgirls with 21 points to go along with four rebounds, four steals and three assists while
Shania Johnson just missed a double-double with 11 points, nine rebounds, six steals and three assists.
NMHU returns to action Tuesday at Northern New Mexico.
