ALAMOSA, Colo. --- The New Mexico Highlands volleyball team kept its hopes at reaching the RMAC Tournament alive as the Cowgirls defeated Adams State 3-2 (20-25, 25-21, 25-23, 17-25, 15-13) Tuesday night at Plachy Hall.
The victory moves the Cowgirls (9-16 overall) to 5-10 in RMAC play - now in a tie for ninth place with ASU (9-15, 5-10). Both teams are now 1.5 games back of Fort Lewis and Colorado Christian for the last two spots into the RMAC Tournament with three games to go - including a game to end the season against Fort Lewis on Nov. 13 (also play nationally ranked Regis on Saturday and at home against Western Colorado on Nov. 12).
As for Tuesday after splitting the first four games, the fifth was equally as close as neither team led by more than two points the entire way. The score was tied 12-12 when NMHU's
Lisi Langi put away a kill and
Samantha Sjogren came up with an ace to set up match point. After an ASU point made it 14-13,
Terayah Stukes put a ball away to close out the match 15-13 and give the Cowgirls the win.
Stukes had a big match with 21 kills and just six attack errors for a .341 hitting percentage - to go along with 14 digs. Langi and
Stacy Johnson each added 13 kills.
Soleil Gandara had 53 assists in teh contest while
Elena Rivera led the way with 19 digs. Johnson and Angellina Oliver each had a team-best four blocks as well.
NMHU returns to action at Regis on Saturday.
