Cowboys come away with split at Colorado Christian

Lakewood, CO --- After scoring 15 runs in the first game, the New Mexico Highlands baseball team end the weekend in a split with Colorado Christian.
 
The Cowboys got the weekend started off hot as they scored twelve runs in the last 3 innings of play while Jadrian Martinez received his first win of the season on the mound giving up 7 hits and striking out six Cougars after pitching a complete nine innings.
 
The Cowboys found themselves down early as Caden Walton homered in the first inning. Joe Kuhn would answer with a home run of his own in the second inning before Estevan De La O would bring in Gavin Gifford from third base to give the Cowboys a 2-1 lead. Gaylan Young would smack his first homerun of the season on the third inning to give the Cowboys a 3-1 advantage.
 
Both teams would stay scoreless until the seventh inning as the Cowboys would score 6 runs off six hits to take a 9-1 lead. The Cowboys would then extend their lead in the top of the ninth inning adding six more runs off a two-out rally that was started with a single from Kuhn.
 
The Cowboys would win the game 15-3 behind De La O who led the Cowboys with four hits in the game with 4 RBI while Joe Kuhn went three for five from behind the plate with 2 RBI.
 
CCU scored two runs early in game two and would add an additional 5 runs to take a 7-0 lead before Gaylan Young scored Ashton Roy from third base with a fielder's choice. The Cougars would go on to win the second game 7-3.
 
Estevan De La O, Ashton Roy, Jared Brown, Gavin Gifford, Cobe Lehman, and Kalen Hammer all recorded a hit during the second game while JT Mossberg received the start on the mound to give up ten hits and two strikeouts.
 
In game three, the Cowboys came out on fire scoring all seven of their runs in the first three innings of play. Joe Kuhn hit his second homer of the year to give the Cowboys a 7-0 lead, however, the Cougars used six innings of scoreless baseball for the Cowboys to come back and to beat the Cowboys 13-7.
 
Jesus Chavez finished the game with three hits off five at-bats and also tallied three RBI while Joe Kuhn finished two for five with a home run and RBI. John Slape (4 IP, 4 strikeouts, 2 hits), Mason Myhre (2 IP, 3 strikeouts, 1 hit), Blake Collier (0-1, 1 IP, 5 hits, 1 strikeout), and Robbie Alarcon (1 IP, 4 hits, 1 strikeout) all aided the Cowboys on the mound.
 
The Cowboys found themselves down 5-1 early in the final game before scoring three runs in the top of the third inning. De La O got things started with a double down the right field line before Charles Morgan stepped up to score De La O with a single up the middle. After stealing second base, Gaylan Young blasted a shot over left field to bring the Cowboys within one run.
 
Ashton Roy would tie the game at 5 with a home run of his own in the top of the sixth inning to take the game into extra innings.
 
Fabian Ferriera would give the Cowboys a 6-5 win over the Cougars with a homerun over left field as the Cowboys and Cougars would split the series 2-2.
 
Young led the Cowboys with two hits and three RBI while Charles Morgan, Joe Kuhn, and Brandon Baier recorded two hits each.
 
The Cowboys will be back in action next weekend as they host UCCS with games starting at 2 pm on Friday.
