Cowgirls drop two games to No. 19 Colorado Mesa

Las Vegas, NM --- The New Mexico Highlands softball team dropped a pair of RMAC games against No. 19 Colorado Mesa on Friday afternoon in Grand Junction, CO.

The Mavericks held the Cowgirls to six hits and one run in game one as Carlee Gonzalez (Fr; Rocklin, CA) and Camrynn Ziegler (Jr; El, Paso, TX) each registered a pair of hits for the Cowgirls. Gonzalez scored the Cowgirls lone run in the top of the fourth inning with a solo home run over left-center. The Mavericks would go on to take game one 10-1.

Samantha Gamboa (Fr; Albuquerque, NM) turns to 0-4 on the season after giving up ten runs off six hits.

The Cowgirls showed life in the batter's box in the second half of the double after putting together six runs off seven hits, however, four errors haunted the Cowgirls, three of which came in the bottom of the fourth inning and resulted in six Maverick runs.

A pair of singles from Tamia Yellowman (Fr; Phoenix, AZ) and Megan Gutierrez (Fr; Whitier, CA) in the top of the fifth inning, followed by Brooklynn DeLozier (Sr; Longmont, CO) getting pegged by a pitch set up Gonzalez to knock her second home run of the afternoon, a grand-slam over center field, as the Mavericks would hold the Cowgirls scoreless in the sixth and seventh inning to take game two 10-6.

Gonzalez and Gutierrez led the team with two hits apiece while DeLozier, Yellowman, and Taylor Fish (Fr; Wildomar) each added a hit. Nathalie Blattmann (So; Abbottsville, Canada) received the start in the circle for the Cowgirls and turns to 3-9 on the season after ten runs off eight hits and a strikeout.

The Cowgirls and the Mavericks will finish the four-game affair with a double header beginning tomorrow morning at 11 am.

GO COWGIRLS!!
